Black Christmas is a 2019 Holiday Slasher film directed by Sophia Takal and written by Takal and April Wolfe. It's the second remake of the original 1974 film of the same name but is a fundamentally different movie in a lot of ways. It has a more fast paced style and a completely different story it's trying to tell. Only a few things tie the three films together, the Christmas theme and the fact that it takes place in a sorority house where people get murdered. The film was written and shot with an R rating in mind but was changed after test screenings to be PG-13, and it shows. A lot of the kill scenes are cut abruptly short in a way that's extremely distracting taking away from the film makers intended vision. Slasher films don't need to be gory to work, Halloween (1978) and the original Black Christmas are great examples of that, but when a film is re-edited to become something that it's not it because of committee think, it comes off cynical and ruins the impact the creators wanted it to have. The writing of this film is completely bonkers, it goes to places that border on schlock and come off comical, which I wasn't expecting due to the serious subject matter. It takes on rape culture in fraternities and toxic masculinity in general which is a real issue that can fit well into a horror movie like this, but it was handled so broadly to the point where it felt like a parody of itself. One thing I really liked about the film was the way it looked; some of the later scenes are bathed in green or red as Christmas lights illuminate character's faces and the environment, and it looked great. There we're probably some good things in there, but its buried by re-edits and a ridiculous plot that doesn't take its subject matter as seriously as it should. Imogen Poots is great as always and does her best to keep this movie afloat along with the pretty cinematography, but sadly, it's just another remake.

I think a lot why doesnt Hollywood make more relative, real life movies? I think I found one! I am tired of fantasy, zombies, unbelievable plots. We all have different tastes, but most of us just want to hear/seen a good story. Just tell me a story with real life consequences, with relatable plots. I dont have to be lifted from my seat with subplots and constant unforeseen conflicts. just tell me a damn story! This fills the bill. January 24, 2020 7:30PM PT Eliza Hittman's teenage abortion drama is a quietly devastating gem. The basic plot of “ Never Rarely Sometimes Always ” is easy enough to describe. A 17-year-old girl named Autumn (Sidney Flanigan) winds up pregnant in a small Pennsylvania town. Prevented from seeking an abortion by the states parental consent laws, she takes off for New York City with her cousin Skylar (Talia Ryder) where what theyd assumed would be a one-day procedure winds up proving considerably more complicated. But that synopsis, and the polemical “issue movie” treatment it might suggest, hardly does justice to the surgically precise emotional calibration of writer-director Eliza Hittman s exceptional film, which is both of a piece with, and a significant step forward from, her prior youth-in-crisis works “Beach Rats” and “It Felt Like Love. ” At once dreamlike and ruthlessly naturalistic, steadily composed yet shot through with roiling currents of anxiety, “Never Rarely Sometimes Always” is a quietly devastating gem. When we first meet Autumn – introverted, morose, standoffish – shes singing a confessional folk take on “Hes Got the Power” at her high school talent show, only for a boy in the audience to interrupt her with a shout of “slut! ” A tense exchange in a pizza place with her ineffectually supportive mother (Sharon Van Etten) and openly hostile step-father (Ryan Eggold) follows, and the fact that her heckler is casually sitting a few tables over tells us everything we need to know about the claustrophobia of her hometown. When she gets back to her bedroom, she takes a look at herself in the mirror, and her eyes naturally turn to the growing bump in her lower abdomen. Autumn finds little help at the womens clinic downtown, where the nurses are outwardly warm and reassuring, though a close read of their word choices makes it fairly clear where they come down on the Roe v. Wade debate. Since an abortion in the state requires a parents permission anyway, Autumn makes some hesitant, though plenty harrowing, attempts to end the pregnancy herself. Fortunately her cousin Skylar, with whom she works at a run-down grocery store, quickly figures out Autumns secret. Slipping some 10s from the register into her pocket, she wordlessly agrees to accompany her to New York for an abortion, and they hop on a Greyhound the next morning. Once they get there, they find themselves shuttled back and forth through the labyrinthine corridors and roadblocks of the American health care system, which forces them to remain in the city much longer than theyd bargained for. Not having anywhere to stay, they spend the rest of their trip slogging sleeplessly from one station to another, lugging their shared suitcase up staircase after staircase, and though both girls are in way over their heads, Hittman never portrays the city as a menacing urban wasteland – like so much of the adult world, its simply indifferent to them. (Which is not to say that the film is without threats. Throughout, Hittman makes us feel the weight of pervasive male attention. Whether its a creeper on the subway, a flirtatious older supermarket customer, or even an ostensibly harmless college kid (Theodore Pellerin) who tries to talk up Skylar on the bus, the fear of men barging their way uninvited into these girls lives hangs heavy over everything. ) Hittmans screenplay is a marvel of economy, never wasting time filling in relationship details or backstories when they can be more powerfully hinted at. Most obviously, we never learn the father of Autumns unborn child, though the film subtly offers two possible candidates – neither are good, and one is particularly bad. The scene that provides the films title is a gut-churning back-and-forth at a clinic that opens several new doors into even darker chapters in Autumns past, all of which are left purposefully, and hauntingly, unexplored. We may not quite get under Autumns skin, but thats by design. It isnt just that she holds everyone at arms length, but that shes a girl for whom survival is contingent upon compartmentalizing trauma, and Flanigan – a first-time actor – has a disarming way of parceling out tiny fragments of Autumns inner life, only to quickly raise her defenses again as soon as she realizes that shes doing it. Skylar is considerably more outgoing, though she knows her cousin too well to try and draw her out. Indeed, the most eerily magical moments in the film are the ones that show Autumn and Skylars almost telepathic communication. With just a shared glance, a squeeze of the hand, or a minute spent applying one anothers makeup in a bathroom, Flanigan and Ryder are able to speechlessly convey things to which other films might devote pages of dialogue – not just reactive emotions, but complex decisions, explanations, assurances. Both performances are outstanding. But whats most remarkable about “Never Rarely Sometimes Always” is the way it manages to honor the gravity of Autumns experience without ever sensationalizing it, or allowing the film to veer toward melodrama. Its clear that taking this trip is one of the biggest, scariest things shes ever done, but once the film fades to black, its easy to imagine Autumn resuming her life more or less the same way it had been before. Its easy to imagine her never mentioning the experience again, consigning it to yet another of the emotional lockboxes she keeps deep inside. This may as well be the sort of thing that happens to teenage girls all the time. Because, of course, it is. Following a thunderstorm of Oprah Winfrey-related controversy and a successful Sundance film festival premiere, “On the Record” has secured domestic distribution at HBO Max. Scrabble-obsessed Merseyside tailor Alan (Bill Nighy) continues the search for his eldest son, who stormed out of the house years earlier after a heated round of the famous board game, never to return. At the same time, he tries to repair his strained relationship with his other son Peter (Sam Riley. Borrowing heavily from the aesthetics of the films of Wes Anderson, Carl Hunters debut film, Sometimes Always Never, shares a similar reverence to the American filmmaker for the culture and stylings of the 60s — in case it wasnt clear, in the films opening moments Alan compliments a group as looking “very Quadrophenia”. The film is awash with pleasant colour and set design to match the performances, particularly that of Bill Nighy — charming but with an undercurrent of grief and waywardness, a desire for familial connection. The obsession with old style permeates the entire film, with fun throwbacks like very deliberately outdated backdrops used for driving sequences. But unfortunately it also appears shabby in ways that arent so intentional. In many scenes the quirky, colourful retro set design finds itself short-changed by harsh and stagey lighting. The script is astute and funny. The styling of the film seems to stand separately from the dialogue, which is realistic by comparison. Though there are fleeting delights to be found in the vibrant production design, abundance of symmetrical framing, and frequent use of tongue-in-cheek title cards, the look only serves to distract from it rather than reinforce any emotive power the film might have. A lot of the imagery is pretty in isolation but works against Frank Cottrell Boyce s script, which is astute and funny, subverting the melodrama of its premise with a very wry, very English sense of humour and lending some edge to character arcs that could come off as sickly sweet. The artificiality of it all places the characters at a remove, making it hard to focus in on what are fairly low-key performances. When Hunter deviates from this rigid style, the film feels a lot more organic. Despite strong performances and a witty script, Sometimes Always Never lays on the homage a little too thick for its own good, shortchanging itself by imitating a particularly idiosyncratic style.

By the time the courtroom scenes happen my husband was completely checked out. There is never any real dramatic music or quicker paced scenes... everything is pretty monotone, with bland scenery and really boring wardrobe. I would have liked someone to have a personality, a little humor, interesting ything. It's unfortunate because the last 10 minutes are the highlight of the film but most probably won't make it to the end.

This fantastic and gripping real story is made for the cinema! I wasn't aware of this great and inspiring person and I am glad this movie introduced me to him and his life story!
While this story is mixes a lot of ups and downs, you can still feel dread at times. This all though builds up to an extend that rewards you and the director is able to get that feeling of relief, camaraderie and courage transported to YOU in the audience, no matter if you are black or white.
The end credits will give you goosebumps, with the expected real life footage that reminds you again, that most of what you've seen in the last 2 hours, really happened to people. This is exactly the thought you should leave the cinema with. Sometimes, it only takes one kind person to have a huge impact.

The movie is based on an actual case that is detailed in Bryan Stevensons book, Just Mercy, published in 2014. Bryan took on Walter McMillians case in 1988 to challenge his wrongful conviction and death sentence. Over the next six years, Bryan filed multiple legal challenges and conducted several hearings, but the trial court refused to grant Mr. McMillian a new trial despite overwhelming evidence of innocence, including the recantation of the States main witness, Ralph Myers. Bryan appealed the ruling and the Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals ordered a new trial because the State withheld evidence of Mr. McMillians innocence. Bryan filed a motion to dismiss all charges; the trial court granted it after the district attorney acknowledged Mr. While the movie condenses the six years of litigation, it mostly tracks the actual account presented in the book. Mr. McMillians claim of innocence attracted national attention as 60 Minutes broadcast a story about the case. The movie accurately introduces other people represented by Bryan Stevenson, including Herbert Richardson, a Vietnam War veteran who was executed in 1989, and Anthony Ray Hinton, who spent nearly 30 years on death row for a crime he did not commit. What made the Walter McMillian case unique? Sadly, while the McMillian case had some unique features, there are actually lots of people who are innocent who have been sentenced to death in the United States. Because Mr. McMillian was accused of a crime that took place in Monroeville, Alabama, the community where Harper Lee grew up and wrote the beloved novel To Kill a Mockingbird, there were interesting dynamics at play in the case. While the Monroeville community loves the Mockingbird story and took great pride in its association with the fictional characters of the book, there was tremendous resistance to recognizing Mr. McMillians innocence despite overwhelming evidence. Walter McMillian and Ralph Myers were both placed on death row before going to trial, which is illegal and a rare form of coercion. After Mr. Myers agreed to give false testimony against Mr. McMillian, he was removed from death row. Mr. McMillian spent 15 months on death row awaiting his trial in an effort to pressure him into pleading guilty. The case was unique as well because the trial judge, Robert E. Lee Key Jr., moved the trial from Monroe County, which is over 40 percent black, to Baldwin County, which had a much smaller black population, making a nearly all-white jury more likely. Despite that change of venue, the jury that convicted Mr. McMillian of capital murder sentenced him to life imprisonment without parole. In Alabama, the trial judge has the authority to override a jurys verdict of life and impose the death penalty, which is what happened. Judge override of life verdicts has been a unique characteristic of the death penalty in Alabama. The Walter McMillian case is also significant because it was one of the very early cases where a death row prisoner was proved innocent after being sentenced to death despite death penalty reforms in the 1970s and early 1980s. What happened to Walter McMillian after his release? Walter McMillian stayed in Alabama after his release. Bryan and the staff at EJI filed civil rights lawsuits against state and local officials for putting him on death row before his trial and for violating his rights. The case settled out of court after several years of litigation. Because police, prosecutors, and judges are immune from judgments that require them to make payments to people victimized by abuse of authority and wrongdoing, the settlement compensation was much less than had been hoped. An effort to make the sheriff accountable went all the way to the United States Supreme Court, but the Court ruled that the sheriff could be protected from liability based on immunity laws. With the money that was obtained for Mr. McMillian, he was able to work in Monroe County selling scrap metal. About 10 years after his release, he began showing symptoms of early onset dementia, which some doctors believed was caused by the trauma of his ordeal on death row. McMillian died in 2013.  He and Bryan remained close friends, occasionally traveling together to talk to audiences about the death penalty. They appeared at a United States Senate hearing shortly after Mr. McMillians release to testify about the need for ending the death penalty and for reform of the criminal justice system. Read Mr. McMillians statement. How often are innocent people sentenced to death? Since 1973,  more than 165 people  have been released from death row after evidence of their innocence was uncovered. A shocking rate of error has emerged: for every nine people executed in this country, one innocent person has been exonerated. Wrongful convictions have been found to result from erroneous eyewitness identifications, false and coerced confessions, misconduct by police and prosecutors, inadequate legal defense, false or misleading forensic evidence, and perjury by witnesses who are promised lenient treatment or other incentives in exchange for their testimony. Nine people have been  exonerated in Alabama. Walter McMillian, Randall Padgett, Gary Drinkard, Louis Griffin, Wesley Quick, James Cochran, Charles Bufford, Anthony Ray Hinton, and Daniel Moore were found not guilty of the crimes that originally put them on Alabamas death row. Gopi Puthran's screenplay is replete with several intense episodes, which eventually make Mardaani 2 a good versus evil battle as the protagonist makes her way to the baddie behind the baddies. The stewing wrath of the protagonist is delineated convincingly while the director also incorporates ample emotional baggage that would cause you to associate with the on-screen characters. Seen in the present setting of the brutality against ladies in society in general and India in particular, a motion picture like Mardaani 2 couldn't have released at a superior time. While it may appear to glorify the brutality here and there, a hard-hitting motion picture like is the need of the hour. Mardaani 2 raises awareness of issues like the safety of women and the gender inequality that exists in society. It also motivates ladies to look within to trigger their very own bold soul.

In spite of being hollowed against a powerhouse entertainer like Rani, Vishal ensures he leaves an ineradicable impression, playing a cold-blooded criminal. Also, his rustic Rajasthani accent is bang on, just enough to add more menace.
With a run time of just under 2 hours, Mardaani 2 is a barnstorming, shocking and outstanding film all in all.
